History of tourist development
The Roman started building roads in about 150 B.C.E. These were quite elaborate in construction and by the time of the emperor Trajan the roman roads comprised a network of some 50, 000 miles.Besides roads, the rivers, seas and oceans were also a way of connection between continents and countries. The Phoenicians were the first to build a network of trading posts around the Mediterranean emanating from their own thriving cities along the coast in what is now Lebanon. They were the first creators of a maritime empire.
The Greeks followed the Phoenicians in becoming great sea traders. Later automobiles entered the travel scene in the United States when Henry Ford introduced his famous Model T in 1908.After identifying the main factors that contributed to the development of tourism, it is necessary to find out the reasons why did people travel in ancient times, besides trading and other similar activities. There were many attractive sites as The 7 Wonders of the world(1.The Great Pyramid at Giza; 2.Hanging Gardens of Babylon, 3.The Statue of Zeus at Olympia, 4.Temple of Artemis, 5.
Mausoleum of Maussollos at Halicarnassu, 6.Colossus of Rhodes, 7. Lighthouse of Alexandria ),cultural and sports events, such as the royal jubilees, the Olympic Games. All this encourages people to travel. During the period of these events the political obstacles were limited and all the participants could freely cross the borders.Antiquity is the time when there appeared the first tourism economic references. As tourists traveled because of the above mentioned reasons, they food and lodging were necessary, and the spent money for these services.
This is how tourism started to be connected with economy.Regarding accommodations, the first guest rooms were parts of private dwellings, and travelers were hosted almost like members of the family. Later, the appearance of railroads, steamships and automobiles, expanded the need for more comfortable and adequate accommodation and there started to appear new forsm of lodging as hotels and motels.
The notion of tourism is strongly connected with the people who had a significant importance for its development. In 1841, Thomas Cook organized the first trip from Leicester to Loghborough, atrip of 12 miles. Thus Cook can be rightfully be recognized as the first rail excursion agent. Later heopened the first tourist agency which continues to be one of the world's largest travel organizations.
