Lucrare de licenta despre Possibility and probability in english grammar
Unlike epistemic modality deontic modality should be necessity - based rather than possibility -based, foe there is a "so-be-it" component in the topic of the utterance; and it is this component that it is commonly grammaticalized in the Imperative and the so- called Subjunctive. The term "deontic" comes from the Greek word "deon" meaning: "what is binding" and refers to a particular branch of modal logic: the logic of obligation and permission. There is an intrinsic connection between deontic modality and futurity.
The difference between epistemic modals and root- modals can be accounted for in terms of trazitive or intranzitive use of the same modal verb of necessity. For example, there is a fundamental difference between the epistemic and deontic uses of "may" and "must". We got at this difference by classifying the epistemic modal verbs as intranzitive and the deontic modals as tranzitive.
