Generally speaking, industrialization was accompanied by higher standards of living for all classes of workers, the skilled and the unskilled alike. That fact, along with the existence of the undeniable possibility of individual advancement no doubt softened the social and psychological impact of industrialization and the social stratification which accompanied it. And, as one student of industrial work has noted, by the time that such potentially divisive conditions had arisen, the movement for political democracy had given the vast majority of adult white males a sense of participation in community and national affairs. Finally, by the 1840s and 1850s, public attention was being increasingly focused on the sectional conflict revolving around the issue of slavery. Social tensions which might otherwise have turned inward could now be directed toward an external threat to liberty.
However, there were significant developments in the organization of labor during the antebellum period. There had long been local societies of printers, cordwainers (shoemakers), and other skilled craftsmen in American towns and cities. In the late 1820s, these societies, still organized along individual craft lines, began to restrict membership to journeymen, in recognition of a growing conflict of interest between practicing artisans and the entrepreneurial master craftsmen. These societies demanded higher wages, better working conditions, and shorter hours (a reduction from thirteen to ten hours per day).44
