King arthur s legend
Arthurian Legend , group of tales that developed in the Dark Ages concerning Arthur , semihistorical king of the Britons , and his knights . The legend is a complex weaving of ancient Celtic mythology with later tradiditions around a core of possible historical authenticity .The earliest references to Arthur found in Welsh sources the poem , Y Gododdin ( c. 600 ) , histories written in Latin , in the 9th and 10th centuries , and tales in the Welsh story collection The Mabinogion (c. 1100 ) . In one of these tales Arthur's wife , Guinevere , and his knights Kay , Bedivere and Gawain make their appearance .
First mentioned in Wace's Roman de Brut. The idea was that the table, being round, would have no head, or place of prominence. Arthur's strategy was to reinforce the idea that none of the barons or dukes or other nobles who sat there would be seen to occupy places of importance greater than any other. Robert de Boron's poem "Joseph dArimathie" talks of a table that Joseph was commanded to make in commemoration of the Last Supper; further, Joseph was to leave a place vacant, symbolizing the seat of Judas. This was the Siege Perilous, which could not be occupied except by the Grail hero. Anyone else who sat there, legend had it, would die. (Galahad, being the Grail hero of later legends, sat there and was unharmed.) Since the Vulgate cycle and certainly in the Malory tradition, the Round Table has been said to have been a dowry from King Leodegrance for his daughter Guinevere's wedding to Arthur. The city of Winchester still sports a Round Table, although it has been dated ...
When the questing knights returned to Camelot, Lancelot forgot the lesson he learned in the Grail chamber and began consorting again with Guinevere. One spring, while traveling with her attendant, Queen Guinevere was captured by a traitorous knight, Sir Meliagrance. Lancelot rescued her. Enemies of Lancelot told the King of Lancelot's love for Guinevere. A party championing the king's cause fought with Lancelot. All those he fought died except the king's illegitimate son, Mordred. Guinevere was sentenced to be burned, but Lancelot rescued her and they went of to the Castle Joyous Guard to be together. Arthur then besieged the castle, but the Pope intervened and commanded a truce. Lancelot and his followers went to France where he held lands. Arthur then invaded France, but while he was away, his son Mordred mounted an uprising with the aid of the dark sorceress Morganna. He seized the throne of Britain and tried to force Guinevere to become his queen. She escaped to the Tower of London. ...
While away from Britain, he left Mordred in charge. Mordred rebelled and Arthur returned to quell him. This led to Arthur's last battle on Salisbury Plain, where he slew Mordred, but was himself gravely wounded. Arthur was then carried off in a barge, saying he was heading for the vale of Avalon. Some said he never died, but would one day return. However, his grave was supposedly discovered at Glastonbury in the reign of Henry II (1154-89). 1993, Illustrated Encyclopedia of Arthurian Legends - Claremont Books.
Sir Gaheris was the son of King Lot of Orkney and his wife Morgause, sister of King Arthur, before being knighted he was squire to his elder brother Gawaine. Sir Gaheris married Lynette on the day his brother Gareth married hersister, Dame Lionesse, of the Castle Perilous.
Galahad was the natural son of Launcelot. His name may be of Welsh origin or come from the place name Gilead in Palestine. His mother was Elaine, and he was placed in a nunnery as a child, being that the abbess there was his great aunt.
After he returned to Britain, Arthur and his knights went on a quest for the Noly Grail, the cup or dish that Jesus used at the Last Supper. After the guest, Arthur had lost nearly half of his men.
Many movies have been known to be better than the novel they have been inspired from but this is not the case of Frank Coppola’s film: Dracula. Although Coppola is a great director his film is inspired by Bram Stoker’s novel that has no historic truth. Personally I think that both movie and book are awful.
The book, written and published in 1897, speaks about the great Count Dracula, the vampire. It is said that he lived in Transylvania, a land of horror and fear, where he used to feed with blood from innocent people, thus transforming them into vampires. Actually Transylvania is a part of modern day Romania and it is not dominated by fear and terror. The book also speaks of Dracula’s Castle on the Borgo Pass, but it doesn’t exist. These things could be explained by the fact that Stoker had never been to Romania. It is believed that Count Dracula was actually Prince Vlad the fifth of Wallachia, also known as Vlad the Impaler. He was a cruel leader who used to impale his enemies ...
Besides, the plot line, involving two older men and their respective family problems, is only a small part of the play. King Lear is about much, much more and undoubtedly reflects deeper concerns that Shakespeare had developed in his already considerable experience as a playwright.
By the time he wrote King Lear, this adventurous young man from Stratford had led a remarkable life, even for Elizabethan times, which we tend to think of as more exciting than our own. During the reign of Elizabeth I, England experienced a period of relative stability and, more important, prosperity. All the arts flourished, but the growth of drama was nothing short of phenomenal. At the zenith of Elizabeth’s power and influence, William Shakespeare came to London and wrote the 37 plays that have established him as the greatest playwright in the English language.
How did it all begin? What purpose drove him to produce this incredible body of work? Where did his inspiration come from? There are many ...
In Cardinal Wolsey, the king, Henry the VIII, found an adviser who was essentially a transition minister, holding a middle place between an English statesman and a Catholic of the old order. Under Wolsey's influence, Henry made war with Louis of France in the pope's quarrel, entered the polemic lists with Luther and persecuted the English Protestants.
I behold thy towers, O Selma! the oaks of thy shaded wall: thy streams sound in my ear; thy heroes gather round. Fingal sits in the midst. He leans on the shield of Trenmor; his spear stands against the wall; he listens to the songs of his bards. The deeds of his arm are heard; the actions of the king in his youth! Oscar had returned from the chase, and heard the hero's praise. He took the shield of Branno from the wall; his eyes were filed with tears. Red was the cheek of youth. His voice was trembling low. My spear shook its bright head in his hand: he spoke to Morven's king.
As the legend writers tied a knight's goodness to piety, they tied Arthur's fate inextricably to a bad end. The king who was the symbol of the prosperity of the nation and the land was sick in his heart and his soul and had sinned against his God; the nation and the land would surely suffer as well.
And so Arthur died or was mortally wounded (take your pick) in a battle as a battle commander who was king of all the land
In functie de aspectul vizat, legendele se clasifica in mitologice:
